Dr. Jiten Mistry

Dr. Jiten Mistry

Surgeon

Jiten Mistry was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. He attended Greenside High School where he excelled academically. His passion for the sciences, coupled with his caring and compassionate nature, inspired him to pursue a career as a medical doctor. He graduated from medical school at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2006.

Background

Dr Mistry was part of the first group of junior doctors in South Africa to serve two years of internship (2007-2008). He elected to do his internship training at one of the largest and busiest hospitals in the southern hemisphere, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. This character-building experience saw him rotate through most of the medical and surgical specialities. The knowledge and experience gained provided a solid foundation for his next year of community service. In 2009, he worked at Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospital Complex, where the seeds were sown for a career in Ophthalmology. Being meticulous in all that he does, and keen to pursue a surgical specialty, he was naturally drawn to the field of Ophthalmology.

After returning from Klerksdorp, Dr Mistry went on to specialize in Ophthalmology through WITS University (July 2010-June 2014). He joined Dr Hein van Wyk in practice soon after completing his specialist training. He is a general Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Anterior Segment and Refractive Eye Surgery. He was awarded a scholarship from the Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium to further his expertise in this subspecialty. This enabled him to spend two months with leading experts at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, the ‘oldest’ eye hospital in the world, gaining valuable insights in the field of Corneal and External Eye Diseases.

It is not the prestige, but the privilege of being able to give the gift of sight, that motivates him to strive for excellence in patient care each day. He has a strong philanthropic ethos and has volunteered at cataract surgery camps and community eye care screening programs around the country. In his spare time, Dr Mistry enjoys reading, gardening, travelling and gastronomic exploration.
