Visiomed Eye and Laser Clinic in Johannesburg has a tradition of world-class eye care in a friendly environment. Its well-established, loyal staff and management team runs the largest Private Refractive Hospital in South Africa – a dream initiated by its founder, the late Dr. Michiel Kritzinger, the ‘Father of Lasik’, who passed away in 2000.
Drs Michael Muller, Daniel Kritzinger and Hein van Wyk, all of whom subsequently took Visiomed to even higher levels of knowledge and expertise over the next twelve years, succeeded Dr Michiel Kritzinger. Their passion and dedication enhanced and expanded their skills, ensuring that Visiomed stayed at the forefront of medical innovation with the best eye surgeons.
When Dr Muller took early retirement in October 2014, Dr Polla Roux, previously a Professor in Ophthalmology at Pretoria Academic Hospital took over his practice. Working with the rest of the team, he now forms part of a ‘Senior Clinical Review Panel’ of eye surgeons. Their task is to constantly review the surgical outcomes and patient satisfaction of any other surgeons working under the Visiomed banner.
Dr Hein van Wyk has been a resident surgeon at Visiomed for the past twelve years. He has a keen interest in Retina, Cataract and Lasik surgery. Dr van Wyk was inspired by our founder and his childhood hero Dr Michiel Kritzinger, and was mentored by Prof Polla Roux at Pretoria Academic Hospital.
Dr Polla Roux, fondly referred to by colleagues and the numerous eye surgeons that studied under his mentorship as ‘Prof Poll’, has vast experience in all aspects of eye surgery, Lasik, Cataract and Retina surgery. Dr. Roux still tutors complex Orbital and Oculoplastic surgery in his spare time.
Dr Daniel Kritzinger has been a resident surgeon at Visiomed for the past twelve years, and was cousin to our founder Dr Michiel Kritzinger. He comes from a family of doctors where his father, brother and two sisters all qualified as doctors. Dr Kritzinger is a skilled general eye surgeon with a particular interest in Refractive surgery, e.g., Lasik and Cataract surgery.
Visiomed can be trusted to treat patients with the utmost dignity and respect. We pledge to keep abreast with constantly evolving technology, and eye surgery techniques, bringing you closer to an age of ‘zero defect’ with bladeless technology.
At the heart of our clinic is the belief that caring for our patients is a privilege, and that our patients deserve to be treated with the utmost respect and dignity. Our mission is to provide the highest quality ophthalmic care and technology in a caring and friendly environment. Over the years, Visiomed has become known for helping many people to achieve clear, natural vision without the use of, or with less dependence on visual aids.
The surgeon personally calculates the factors that will provide the best possible outcome for you. Our Resident Surgeons‘ experience makes the difference.
Attention to detail is part of the Visiomed Magic. Each patient is an individual; your left eye and right eye are unique. The nomograms are calculated to each eye and the laser is then calibrated to ensure precision. A nomogram is a unique group of detailed settings that is programmed into the laser for each patient. Ultimately, what you have is individualised patient eye treatment.

My staff is dedicated to their profession, well qualified, and with a strong management team we run the largest Private Refractive Hospital in South Africa – a dream initiated by its founder (and my father in law), the late Dr Michiel Kritzinger, the ‘Father of Lasik’, who passed away in 2000.
“Professionally We Serve. Personally We Care” is more than just a captivating slogan, it is a philosophy that describes the dedication of our employees, medical staff and in caring for those in their time of need. While Visiomed is committed to providing advanced services and technology, it is the people that are the secret to our success.
With the ever changing patient expectations, medical aid price regulation, the South African‘s economical challenges in the way health care is provided, our commitment at Visiomed to provide exceptional patient care remains strong. Everyone is important at Visiomed, and we want everyone who enters our doors to experience the same level of outstanding care.
As part of a patient satisfaction initiative, Visiomed recently implemented a program called, “20/20 over happy vision “.
