Patient Education

Each Surgeon has a professional team who pride themselves on patient education. Visiomed has a dedicated Sister, Louise van der Schyf who assists optometrists and patients with procedure information and communication. She works closely with the surgeons and their staff.

Louise conducts monthly talks and interviews with doctors and optometrists on eye surgery or eye related matters in aid of educating the public. Her broadcasts can be found on Radio Today (AM 1485) or DSTV Radio programmes (channel 169).

Among other duties, Louise is responsible for:

  • Patient Seminars
  • Literature on each procedure done at Visiomed
  • Literature on LASIK, intraLasik, Cataract and Retinal Procedures
  • Public information sessions
  • Continues medical education within the Eye care industry

Louise as head of communications believes we have relationships, not just patients.

Theatre education for optometrists

Visiomed sees the necessity for co-management between optometrists and eye specialists and therefore we invite optometrists to view live surgery.

This also forms part of their continued educational programmes. This experience gives them a better understanding of surgery and they also gain insight as to what their clients can expect on the day of surgery.

When this knowledge is conveyed to the client, the client will feel more at ease and gain peace of mind before even consulting the surgeon for the first time.

My name is Mary Harkin and Dr Kritzinger did the laser surgery on my eyes . I would like to thank him and his staff for the professional and caring manner in which I was treated throughout the process. A word of thanks for the awesome way you treated me during my short stay at Visiomed.

I have recently had “the pleasure” to have both my cataracts removed and new lenses implanted. Not only was the operation very successful and truly amazing as I was semiconscious during the procedure, it was done in a truly professional way. The way both the reception and theatre staff treats patients is way beyond the current norm. The warm blankets when you arrive in the morning and the cup of tea and sandwiches after the operation is just magic. You never feel like a patient. The efficiency when it comes to making your appointment for the operation and getting all the necessary documentation for the medical aid was just super.

To drive to the office a couple of days later and to the see the splendour and brilliant colours of everything in the most beautiful morning light, was the most unbelievable experience I have had for many years. To everybody involved, thank you very much, Your commitment to excellent service was noted and truly appreciated.

Gister weer in die besonder aan jou gedink.

Ek het ‘n probleem gehad voordat jy op die toneel verskyn het. Ja, dit was werklik so want in my vorige soeke na uitkoms was dit die een teleurstelling op die ander.

Op heel besondere manier kom jou verwysing. Met groot verwagtinge het ek  die aanbeveling aangegryp en gister, in die teater, kom ons aan die einde van die proses wat vir my soos ‘n wonderwerk is.

Al wat nog gedoen moet word is die gebruiklike opvolg besoek, vanoggend , aan Dr van Wyk. Nogmaals baie dankie dat ek juis by hom uitgekom het. Met sy innemende persoonlikheid het hy my onmiddelik laat tuis voel. Geen twyfel dat hy ook talentvol is en ek het al my vertroue in hom geplaas. Hoe anders teenoor my vorige ondervinding. Selfs na die eerste oog gedoen was het ek ‘n geweldige verbetering waargeneem ….dit was werklik wonderbaarlik.

En waar die proses nou, so vertrou ek, ten einde loop kan ek nie ‘die knoppie druk’ sonder  ‘n spesiale dankie vir Louise.Dit was ‘n hartseer situasie maar jy het lig gebring………..jy was die sleutel tot die suksesvolle, en aangename uitkoms. Wat kan meer belangrik wees as om weer alles om my heen duidelik te kan waarneem. So sal alles onthou word…….en ook

my bewondering vir jou skryfkuns…..absoluut talentvol.

Indien alles volgens plan verloop is ek so aan die einde van volgende week by my jongste…..doer ver, amper in die skadu van Buckinghampaleis. Ek sien geweldig uit daarna……dit is altyd spesiaal om saam hulle te wees. En selfs daar sal daar bekendheid kom vir ene Louise van der Schyf……want in my gesprek sal dit aangenaam wees om ‘n relaas van hierdie ondervinding te gee…..ook die waardevolle betekenis van goeie kommunikasie.
